In the field of consumer goods, and particularly in the field of books, magazines, and other articles that are packaged for retail sale, it is important to package the goods in such a manner that the article is both attractive to the consumer and that the package may be readily shipped to the retailer.
It is also important that the package be as low in cost as possible. Furthermore, it is important that the package be reliable, in that it may be used multiple times, without damage to the article packaged therein. For example, it is important that a book or magazine be stable within a package, and it is important that the package be stable and intact when delivered to the retailer.
Often, printed matter such as books, magazines, and the like are sold to the consumer with accompanying advertisements, or other items, along with the book or magazine. For example, magazine subscriptions may include a prepaid envelope with instructions and forms for sending the return postal card to the magazine. Book publishers often include a blank return postal card along with the book or magazine, with instructions on how to return the book or magazine to the publisher. The return postal card or the instructions are often found within the back cover of the book or magazine.
In the prior art, the books, magazines, and the like are packaged by a two-piece box, which is typically composed of a two-piece printed paperboard box which surrounds and contains the articles. A first piece of the box, typically referred to as the cover, is configured to surround and contain the article. The cover and base are glued together, and the cover and base are sometimes folded into a third configuration, for shipping and display purposes. The cover and base are not glued to the article, and so, when the article is removed from the package, there is nothing preventing the article from falling apart.
